Chief Economic Adviser at Allianz; President of Queens' College, Cambridge
Mohamed El-Erian was for years the number two at bond giant PIMCO and is today one of the most quoted economists in the world. He no longer runs a large fund, which gives him the freedom to criticise central banks openly. He coined 'the new normal' for the sluggish growth after the credit crisis and warned early that the inflation of 2021 would not prove transitory.
El-Erian writes and speaks almost daily, in plain language, about exactly the subjects central bankers talk around. That makes him a useful translator between the jargon of the ECB and the Fed and the question of what it means for a portfolio.
Completes a doctorate in economics at Oxford and starts at the International Monetary Fund.
Moves to PIMCO, where he manages emerging markets.
Becomes head of Harvard University's endowment.
Returns to PIMCO as co-chief investment officer alongside Bill Gross.
Leaves PIMCO and becomes chief economic adviser at parent company Allianz.
