Co-founder and general partner, Andreessen Horowitz
As a student, Marc Andreessen wrote the first widely used web browser, making him one of the architects of the commercial internet. Today, through Andreessen Horowitz, he is one of Silicon Valley's most influential venture capitalists. He is also an outspoken essayist: his writing on technology and progress is praised and attacked in equal measure.
Andreessen sees technology companies years before they go public. His views on which technologies genuinely matter therefore run ahead of what eventually shows up in listed companies. Bear in mind, though, that he has a financial interest in the optimism he preaches.
